In early April, the Bach Dang Wharf area (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) became more vibrant and attractive than ever as 15 giant cannons were installed in preparation for the grand celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 – April 30, 2025). The image of these majestic cannons alongside the solemn presence of soldiers evoked a glorious historical period, prompting many locals and tourists to stop, admire, and capture meaningful commemorative photos.

On the afternoon of April 7, with mild weather, crowds passing by Bach Dang Wharf couldn't hide their curiosity and excitement when unexpectedly encountering the cannon display—an image usually only seen in films or military museums. Not only city residents but also many international visitors lingered to enthusiastically take selfies next to the massive cannons, as if touching a vivid piece of history amidst the modern urban setting.
The cannons, placed respectfully along the riverside park by the Saigon River on the central route, are the result of a meticulously planned transportation and installation process carried out by Brigade 96 (Artillery Corps). Each cannon weighs approximately 4 tons, firmly secured in place and regularly inspected by specialized soldiers. Every component—from the wheel axle and safety lock to the barrel—has been thoroughly checked to ensure maximum safety and perfection for the upcoming solemn ceremony.
The type of artillery to be used during the celebration is 105mm ceremonial shells with paperboard tips—a special design to ensure safety during firing while minimizing smoke and dust, offering a grand yet environmentally friendly ceremonial effect. The cannon salute will take place simultaneously with the parade and military procession, with 21 rounds fired solemnly to the Vietnamese national anthem—a sacred moment promising to stir deep feelings of national pride among all citizens.

It is known that on the night of April 6, the entire cannon lineup was transported from Long Thanh District (Dong Nai Province) to Ho Chi Minh City using specialized vehicles, in a journey that met strict standards for timing, safety, and technical precision. This is one of the key preparations for the upcoming national-level event.
More than just objects for ceremonial use, these cannons carry profound symbolic value—reminding us of the brave soldiers of the past, and the arduous yet heroic days of the struggle for national independence and reunification. Amid the modern development of Ho Chi Minh City, the presence of such historically significant imagery evokes pride, emotion, and a sense of reliving the sacred memories of the nation.
This year's April 30 celebration promises to be an unforgettable milestone, with the participation of over 13,000 people in the parade and procession, along with an impressive aerial display by the Vietnamese Air Force featuring helicopters, Yak-130 jets, Su-30MK2 aircraft, and more—creating a magnificent picture that bridges Vietnam’s glorious history with its radiant present as the country moves steadily forward in integration and development.
